The 26-year-old singer recently opened up about his struggles with gender and self-image.
Speaking with Jameela Jamil, Sam Smith honestly revealed that he has considered getting a sex change in the past.
In her I Weigh interview series, Jameela asked Sam for his opinion on gender and sexuality.
In an emotional reveal, the four-time Grammy winner confessed that he identifies as “nonbinary” and “gender queer”.
The Londoner said: “I’ve always had a bit of a war in my body and my mind.
“I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between – somewhat on the spectrum.
He continued: “I’ve sometimes sat there and questioned, do I want a sex change? It’s something I still think about, but I don’t think it is.”
The Stay With Me hitmaker spoke about relating to women as well as men, and the inner conflict that has brought.
He admitted: “I do think like a woman in my head at times.
“I’ve tried to change that into my thoughts on gender…when I move, when I have sex with men, it’s very feminine. I’m feminine in many ways — and I’ve resented that.”
Sam also chatted about his struggle with body image in the past, and the emotional trauma it brought him from an early age.
From the age of five or six, he felt he carried more weight than average on his chest.
Eventually, when he hit 11-years-old, he made a doctor’s appointment to see how the issue could be resolved.
The singer said: “I was so self-conscious that it was affecting my mood every day and my life as a teenager.
“I was holding a lot of oestrogen in my chest. I had breasts.”
Sam bravely revealed that he had undergone liposuction at the age of 12: “At the time I was very happy about it.”
In the early years of his pop career, he made headlines after losing a significant amount of weight.
The star revealed that his image has been a constant struggle throughout his life: “Literally everything I’ve ever been sad about is my weight.”
Hopefully, his honest approach to battling his demons can help others facing similar issues.
